Jewish History of Strasbourg Tour
A 2-hour walking tour. We'll being at the site of the now-destroyed synagogue at Les Halles. Then we'll walk through the old town (city center) to see the statues of Ecclesia and Sinagoga at the Strasbourg Cathedral. On the way, we'll pass Place Kleber, Place Gutenberg, and memorials to local Jews who died in the Holocaust. I'll point out prime icecream and photo opportunities! We'll continue on to an ancient Jewish mikve. At the 'Jewish Bridge," we'll learn about the Valentine's Day Jewish Massacre that spurred the mass emigration of survivors into the Alsatian countryside, giving rise to rural Jewish life. We'll end at the synagogue that currently serves Strasbourg's Jewish community to discuss Jewish life in Strasbourg today.
Village Synagogues & Cemeteries of Western Alsace 1
Begin the day at the vast Jewish cemetery in Cronenbourg. Learn about its memorial monuments, notable people buried here, and the challenges of Jewish cemeteries in Alsace, France and Europe. Enjoy the view of green pastures dotted with picturesque villages against the backdrop of the Vosges Mountains as we drive into the countryside to Balbronn. How did Jews come to live here? Visit Balbronn's cemetery and synagogue. Have a country lunch (kosher options available upon request). See the singular attic-synagogue of Traenheim, the only synagogue in Alsace with painted murals. End in Westhoffen, with visits to the cemetery, where prominent personalities find their origins, synagogue, Rabbi's house, and culturally significant Westhoffen City Hall.

Meet at the Strasbourg Synagogue for an introduction to the Jewish heritage of Alsace. Drive to the synagogue at Balbronn. Continue on to Westhoffen to see the synagogue, Rabbi's house, and Westhoffen City Hall. See tombs of persons of note in the Jewish Cemetery. Walk on the ramparts and enjoy a picnic lunch with views of the beautiful Alsatian river valley. Explore the Jewish Alsatian Heritage Museum in Marmoutier, its synagogue and cemetery. Proceed to Schwenheim to see the old synagogue and cemetery before returning to Strasbourg.
